NEW Star Trek this weekend!!!

Posted by: Captain Handshaw on

Unfortunate technical problems (where is Scotty when you need him?!?) disrupted last weekends viewing of the NEW Star Trek movie Star Trek: Of Gods and Men produced by various Star Trek alumni.  A specific Blu-Ray firmwear update also prevent us from seeing Jumper, which had just arrived before the meeting.  We should have the Star Trek problem solved this weekend, and I’ve already updated our Blu-Ray player with the specific upgrade to make Jumper play (and watched it without any problems).  And since this should be a kids weekend with both Anthony and Tasha in attendance, we should also consider finally watching Meet the Robinsons…so we have a lot to consider.
Nevertheless, we should plan on definitely seeing the new Star Trek movie…
See the entire new (3 part) 90 minute film with us this Saturday 6/28 before our exclusive advance showing of the new Doctor Who episode and it’s behind the scenes confidential.  As always, we will be enjoying all our entertainment on Calistoga’s 42″ Plasma HDTV.  Our evening will begin at 4pm with showings of Lost In Space, UFO, 3rd Rock From The Sun, and possibly Jumper, or Meet The Robinsons.  We will determine which we see at the meeting.  There are also some great outtakes at the end of OGaM.

The Death of Blu-ray…

Posted by: Captain Handshaw on May 27, 2008
I just went to my local Walmart (who recently cited that they were “dropping HD-DVD and going with Blu-Ray”, which helped lead to the death of HD-DVD), andfound their once small Blu-Ray inventory had now dwindled to barely a handful.   If Walmart isn’t selling Blu-Ray discs (or Blu-Ray players), than what does that say for the life of Blu-Ray.  It seems that the common folk just aren’t buying into it.  Sure, I see a lot of Blu-Ray discs at Best Buy, but I don’t see many people (aside from me) who are checking them out.  I have both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players and am I concerned that now BOTH will most likely die?  Not really because, as I chronicled below, High-Definition DVDs are not really much better than regular DVDs (which, when their 520 lines of resolution are up-converted to 1080, looks REAL good).  The ONLY thing going for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray was their capacity, which NEITHER took advantage of.  Regular DVDs hold 4.7 GB of data (one side), HD-DVDs hold 30 GB (both sides), while Blu-Ray hold about 50 GB (both sides).  I’ve seen DVDs hold 3 or 4 movies, and up to 5 - 45 minute episodes of a TV show (like StarGate SG-1), yet I’ve seen HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray spread themselves out onto 2 discs when I would think that with their capacity that they could easily fit it all onto one?!?!?  (check out the new Rambo Blu-Ray disc…2 discs just like the DVD special 2-disc edition, with NO MORE MATERIAL than the DVD special 2-disc edition) What’s with that???  Guess they are just too lazy to combine/produce the 2 discs into one???  Butt-stupid waste of technology…not even the production companies care.

Prince Caspian approaches…

Posted by: Captain Handshaw on April 29, 2008
At Starbase Calistoga this week…(note the changes)
With all the kids on board (that would be Chief of Security, Anthony Ruth, and Chief of Medical Tasha Handshaw), we will first view the next episode ofLost In Space“.  We then will make a creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky visit to see the first few episodes of The Addams Family.  At this point Erica and Johnny should be at the meeting after attending a wedding.  Then in anticipation of the 2nd Chronicles of Narnia: “Prince Caspian” debuting in 2 weeks, we will watch the first episode “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe“.  Then a brainstorming session about the next convention…the shuttle of the year presentation, the commissioning, the wedding, the kidnapping, the rescue.  Finally ending the evening with our exclusive advance viewing of NEXT weeks episode of Doctor Who (before it airs on TV).  As always the U.S.S. StarQuest prides itself with presenting all our programming in the highest definition possible on Starbase Calistoga’s giant 42″ view-screen, whether it be HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, digital high-definition, or at worst…upconverted.  All humans (and aliens) are encouraged to join us and enjoy the DELICIOUS food that Starbase Calistoga has to offer.

IRONMAN, a REGAL Treat!

Posted by: Captain Handshaw on April 27, 2008

I haven’t been this excited since Cloverfield.  I’ve always liked Ironman since I was a kid reading comics in the back room of my dad’s grocery store in Naples Park.  I don’t remember much about those comics, but the new movie looks like a great story and Robert Downey seems like the perfect actor to play the part.
Due to the StarQuest’s association with REGAL Theatres, crewmembers were invited to attend a FREE preview of the film the night before it opens (Thursday)…most of my gallant crew will be at the REGAL Hollywood 20 Theatres in Naples FL to view IRONMAN…THANK YOU REGAL THEATRES!!!!!!!!  Yet another reason to be part of our gallant crew.  IRONMAN-WEBSITE
