Review: ‘Eureka’ - Show Me The Mummy

Posted by: Ship's Computer on
The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the episode "Show Me the Mummy" from the SciFi Channel series, "Eureka." This episode was a bit of a departure than the normal episode of "Eureka." Instead of focusing on some new technology gone awry, this one tackled the ancient lore of Egyptian mummies and curses in an entertaining, yet uneven fashion. Despite the difference in focus, it was pretty much business as usual in "Eureka." That isn’t necessarily bad, but it is getting to be a bit too routine. In the first "Post-Stark" episode, Stark somehow managed to return, albeit in the form of a hologram he programmed onto Allison's necklace. What's this have to do with mummies? Absolutely nothing. But for some odd reason, Stark kept appearing to Allison and only at the end did she discover ...

‘Doctor Who’ Coming To America … Again

Posted by: Ship's Computer on
Reports are starting to circulate that two of the proposed three "Doctor Who" specials planned for 2009 will be filmed in the United States rather than the United Kingdom. According to News of the World, a BBC source said that such a move -- the first since the 1996 "Doctor Who" film was shot in Vancouver, B.C. as well as San Francisco -- is in response to the show's continued popularity in the United States where it's shown on SciFi Channel. "Two specials in America, with a U.S. setting and U.S. assistant, will take it to another level," a source told the publication. "David Tennant is already gaining a huge following and this will make him really hot property." This news comes as SyFy Portal was chasing its own leads on such a report -- but one that came with a different set of ...

‘Battlestar Galactica’ Fans Never Depended On Ratings

Posted by: Ship's Computer on
Ratings have been on a slow decline for "Battlestar Galactica" since it premiered as a full-fledged series on the SciFi Channel in 2004. That's not exactly news to many people, since "Battlestar" is an intricately planned serialized drama, the type of show that rarely wins new viewers to replace those who have eroded because they would've had to been fans from the beginning to really know what was going on. But ratings aren't all that, according to Associated Press reporter Chris Talbott, who said NBC Universal -- which owns the rights to "Battlestar" -- are moving ahead with a number of projects that aren't exactly indicative of bad ratings. That includes a new telemovie to be directed by series star Edward James Olmos as well as a possible new spinoff series in the form of "Caprica." ...

‘Stargate: Atlantis’ Gets Boost: From Web Pirates

Posted by: Ship's Computer on
In the week following the announcement that MGM and SciFi Channel were pulling the plug on "Stargate: Atlantis," those who choose to illegally download television programs thought it would give it a nod. TorrentFreak is reporting that "Atlantis" was the most pirated television show for the week of of Aug. 17-24, unseating the Olympics opening ceremony and "Weeds" as the most popular show downloaded by BitTorrent users. It previously filled the No. 6 position, which was taken over by USA Network's "Burn Notice" instead. The site didn't report the number of downloads, but said larger network shows like "Lost" and "Heroes" can get up to 10 million downloads in a single week when they are showing new episodes. However, by the site's own lists, the show to get the most downloads in ...
